It's Christmas in Australia as Diane, played by the Dee Wallace, brings together her estranged family for a chaotic holiday gathering. A 20 year old decision literally comes back to haunt her when the ghost of Christmas past comes knocking at her door and is invited inside the family estate. Festivities quickly turn blood red, when the stranger is revealed to be Cletus, Diane's aborted fetus, all grown up, very much alive and ready to terrorize his long lost mother. Diane must face her past and explain the hideous truth that is trying to kill them all, especially to Jerry, her Down Syndrome son, before it's too late.

A mother (Dee Wallace) must protect her family on Christmas Day from ademented stranger (Sam Campbell) who is hell-bent on tearing themapart.

The 2016 Fantasia International Film Festival has been shattering myexpectations, and not always in a good way. Two of the best surpriseshave been Geoff Redknap's "The Unseen" and the conspiracy-themed "ManUnderground". But then we have the proverbial stinkers. Takashi Miikeadded a dud to otherwise illustrious career with "Terraformars". Andthen there is "Red Christmas".

First of all, I'm a big fan of Christmas-themed horror films. Not allare winners ("Silent Night, Deadly Night II") but almost all are atleast entertaining. And "Red Christmas" has Dee Wallace both starringand producing, which is good thing – she's been a genre icon for overthree decades thanks to "E.T." and "The Hills Have Eyes", among others. But somehow these two strengths just don't carry the picture.

And then there are secondary considerations. I also love slasher films, and you have to appreciate the design that went into Cletus. He iscertainly one of the most refreshing killers we've seen in years, withno comparison in recent memory. And the idea of having an abortionclinic theme was very wise, and it makes you realize how much this isan untapped area for horror. There was John Carpenter's "Pro-Life"(2006), but no other comes to mind. So these were some of the fewstrong points.

But the shortcomings just far outweigh the positives that everyonebrought to the table. The dialogue seemed poorly scripted anddelivered, the pregnant woman looked like she was literally holding upa beach ball under her dress. Everyone makes poor decisions; and whilepoor decisions are common in slasher films, these may be among theworst. The lighting – what is up with the neon lighting? I presume itis supposed to be Christmas lights, but it doesn't look like them (andhow are they working if the power is out?). And let's not get startedon the stereotypical, one-dimensional closeted Christian pastor.

And one of the biggest downfalls is making the film a Christmas story. There is a bit of Christmas-related plot (the giving of gifts), butthis is rather irrelevant to the story at large. Cletus could haveshown up on any day of the year and it would have been just as well. The setting of Australia also seems wrong for Christmas, because animportant part of Christmas horror is snow. I suppose that might beunfair to Australians because it more or less means they can't makeChristmas horror films… but I think my point is really that if you'regoing for a Christmas theme, really make it somehow recognizable orimportant to the plot. Instead, it seems like this was just pandering, trying to capitalize on a title that is similar to "Black Christmas"…and this one isn't even as good as the "Black Christmas" remake.

I may be coming down unusually hard on the film. "Red Christmas" isbetter than many of the low-budget horror films that flood the marketthese days. And I have to give them credit for the practical effects;some are rough, but I'd rather see a bad practical effect than bad CGI.What really disappointed me was how this film made the cut forFantasia. With the dozens of top-notch world premieres, it's a shamewhen something like this slips through. Critic Matt Donato really sumsit up when he says the movie "falls short of being the next killeryuletide classic." Yep. Expect it to die a quiet death on video storeshelves.

I'm a SLASHER maniac, and Christmas movies are always fun. I enjoyedRED Christmas from the beginning till the end, ans we have to givecredit to the beautiful ans talented DEE WALLACE who give another TOURDE FORCE performance. I really envoyed seeing her, and i think she's afantastic Scream Queen. But beside all that, that little movie, shot in15 days has a real soul, and i really appreciate the way they used thelight in the film. For me, it's an instant Christmas Classic that i'llbuy and watch every years in the Holiday beside GREMLINS and BLACKChristmas. If you like 80 Slashers films, and if you felt in love withDEE WALLACE since your childhood (E.T, or HOWLING), you'll have a greattime.

Red Christmas is a great gift to the horror genre. It's in thetradition of classics like, Silent Night, Deadly Night and ChristmasEvil. If you didn't know any better, you would think you picked up aVHS copy off the shelf of your local video store's horror section in1980 something. It has that type of feel, a throwback to the glory daysof hand made gore. The kill scenes are great and gruesome, and let'snot forget creative. It's an essential piece of horror pop- cultureworth watching over and over again. It's not Santa doing the slicingand dicing in this holiday slasher flick, but instead Cletus, anaborted baby all grown up and ready to get his revenge on ChristmasEve! Wow, this is some powerful and controversial subject matter thatcould have easily went the wrong direction, but director Craig Andersonwas able to tackle the topic of abortion and make it work in this Blevel horror flick. Let's not forget about the ultimate scream queen,Dee Wallace, known for such movies as E.T. The Extra- Terrestrial,Cujo, The Howling, Critters, and Hills Have Eyes. She is a phenomenalactress, and her talents shine brighter than ever in this new Christmashorror classic! It's the type of movie that you find yourself thinkingabout and talking about after you're done watching it. You know it's agood movie when it stays with you and you feel the need to tell otherpeople about it. Definitely worth checking out. You won't bedisappointed.
