Truly silly, but fully enjoyable, "How to Be a Latin Lover" hits allthe right notes. Eugenio Derbez plays a Mexican who marries a richwoman from Beverly Hills, only to get dumped years later with no moneyand no idea how to work. Moving in with his hard-working sister (SalmaHayek), he quickly learns that there's something to be said for pullingone's weight...which in this guy's case means some truly awkwardthings! The movie also takes the time to poke fun at lazy rich peoplewho spend their money on extravagant things (such as a birthday partyfeaturing a certain satirical singer). But mostly, it's just an excuseto have fun. I suspect that they had a lot of fun filming it. The restof the cast includes Kristen Bell, Raquel Welch, and former "DailyShow" correspondents Rob Corddry and Rob Riggle.

Kind of like Charles Darwin's Theory of Evolution, Hollywood is asurvival of the fittest game. The A-list celebrities like GeorgeClooney, Samuel L. Jackson and Seth Rogan are always talked aboutbecause they've fought their way to be sold to you. The industry knowsthat thousands of hopefuls come to California with hopes of making itas big as George Clooney. If there's anything that the industry hates,it's unpredictability. Rather then having a revolving door of actors, studios like Universal and Paramount will keep the gravy train with thestars they know already gets people to buy tickets and continue pushingthem.

The good news is that occasionally, a side actor or two can have enoughcharisma to get the spotlight on them and give them a chance to havetheir own staring role. Sometimes it can lead to new interests, andsome prove that their better people in the background. One of theseactors is Mexican star Eugenio Derbez. While the majority of his workin film and television is from south of the boarder, he has been luckyto get a couple of American roles. How to Be a Latin Lover is theactors first staring role along with some other big names.

Ever since he was a boy, Maximo (played by Eugenio Derbez) had wanted alife of luxury. When he was twenty-two, he married a woman who wastwice his age, but was incredibly wealthy by using his smooth Latin wayof seduction. Cut to years later where Maximo is living off of hiswife's riches and resides in Los Angeles. His gravy train ends when hiswife cheats on him with a Ferrari salesman. Not only does she want adivorce, but with the prenuptial contract he signed, Maximo getsnothing.

With nowhere else to go, he finds his sister Sara (played by SelmaHayek) who is widowed with her child Hugo. Though she hates him toabandoning the family, she lets him stay under the condition that hefinds a job. While taking Hugo to school, he notices Celeste (played byRequel Welsh) who is worth even more then his ex wife and is a widow. He schemes to reclaim his wealthy lifestyle by resurrecting his Latincharm. He sees that life isn't fair, but starts to learn the importanceof family. Along for the ride is friend and fellow gigolo Rick (Playedby Rob Lowe) and a frozen yogurt employee Cindy (played by KristenBell).

For a comedy about a selfish man learning the importance of friends andfamily, it doesn't seem the original. I'd be lying if the saves theentire movie, but the majority of it is carried through thanks toEugenio Derbez. At first I wasn't into his character, but he managed toconvince me that he was likable and making something of an effort tochange. While the movie has its shares of slapstick, the best jokescome from Eugenio when he makes a lot of witty remarks.

As for the story, I wish that the writers could have done somethingmore outside-the-box and less predictable. The idea of subverting theLatin lover trope is an idea that could be funny (to be fair, it isfunny for a while), but I think more could have been done with thestory to make it more unique. I'm certainly glad I saw it, but I hadtwo other problems. It's pacing seems padded during the second half, which makes the two hour running time too long. The other is the thirdact, which goes for the "liar-revealed" plot point that seems dated.

I'll give this six speedos out of ten. While it's not the best, itcould have been a lot worse. I think this movie will defiantly do wellon the home market where Eugenio Derbez can make a lot of people laugh.I like him and hope that this movie will get him more work. If your inthe mood for a comedy, you'll probably find plenty of Mexican charm, though it's not one of the greats.

Beginning with the ridiculously stupid opening scene, this movie dragson to become nothing more than two torturous hours of lame,simple-minded, disconnected gags ('pull my finger' ha, ha, ha) strungtogether to form an even lamer simpler-minded plot, if it can be calledthat.

This kind of low-brow crap is all the likes of Rob Lowe can qualifyfor, but it was sad to see Salma Hayek and the venerable and iconicRaquel Welch stoop to this low a level. Didn't they read the scriptbefore they signed?

The kid was cute, and there actually was ONE funny gag (that did notinvolve any of the main players nor the 'plot' - which probablyexplains why it was funny) about mid-way. But neither of these madeenduring the nonstop inane-ness of everything else worth it.

The other reviews, which I made the huge mistake of relying on, arenothing more than a shameless shill-fest.
